Summary AI - TLDR Summarize exists for one moment: you have a wall of text and about thirty seconds to decide whether it is worth your time. Install a phone app for that, and you have already lost the thirty seconds. We built Gist, a free text summarizer that runs right here in your browser. Paste in a paragraph or a full article and it pulls out the sentences that carry the most weight, live, with nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
Summarize text now
Paste your own text into the box, or drag the slider to change how much of the original survives. Everything updates as you move.
How to use it
Paste or type your text into the box at the top. Gist scores every sentence by how often its key words repeat elsewhere in the text, then pulls the highest-scoring sentences back out in their original order so the summary still reads like a shorter version of your source, not a jumbled list. Drag the length slider to keep anywhere from 10% to 60% of the original sentences, and watch the word count and the summary itself update on every move.
There is no “summarize” button, because there is nothing to wait for. Your text is saved on your device as you type, so closing the tab or reloading the page never costs you a draft. Nothing you paste is uploaded anywhere: the entire summary runs in JavaScript, on your machine, with zero network requests. A separate “Copy summary” button lets you grab the result for your own notes or email, independent of the Share button.
How it compares to Summary AI - TLDR Summarize
Gist uses a frequency-based extractive method: it ranks the sentences you already wrote and picks the strongest ones. It does not understand your text the way a large language model does, and it never rewrites a single word. That is a deliberate trade, not a shortcut we are hiding. A full AI summarizer, including the real Summary AI - TLDR Summarize app, uses a language model that actually reads for meaning. That gets you abstractive summaries written in new sentences, not just extracted ones, plus multi-document summarization across several sources at once, translation into other languages, and handling for text where the important idea is spread across a paragraph rather than sitting in one sentence.
Our honest advice: use Gist when you need a fast, private read on a single piece of text and want to see exactly which sentences it kept. Install the full app when you are summarizing across multiple documents, need the summary translated, or want an AI to actually rephrase dense material into something easier to read rather than trim it down.

Frequently asked questions
Can I summarize text online for free?
Yes. Gist runs entirely in this page and costs nothing to use. Paste in any text, drag the slider to set how short you want the result, and the summary appears instantly with no account and no download.
Is this powered by AI like ChatGPT?
No, and we want to be upfront about that. Gist uses a lightweight frequency-scoring algorithm that ranks the sentences you already wrote and pulls out the strongest ones. It does not generate new sentences or truly understand meaning the way a large language model does. If you want an actual AI-written summary, Summary AI - TLDR Summarize uses a real language model for that.
Does my text get uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser with JavaScript, and there are zero network requests once the page has loaded. Your draft is saved to your device’s local storage so a reload does not lose it, and it never leaves that device either.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. Because the summarizing logic runs entirely on your device with no server calls, you can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working exactly the same.
Is this the official Summary AI - TLDR Summarize app?
No. Gist is an original tool we built, inspired by the quick-summary problem that Summary AI - TLDR Summarize solves. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the developers of Summary AI - TLDR Summarize. For AI-generated abstractive summaries and translation, get the official app from the store above.
